JPL project scientist Bob Pappalardo, an ASU doctoral graduate, looks at a Europa globe as he talks on Friday, September 6, 2024, in ISTB4 on the ASU Tempe campus, about the upcoming NASA mission to explore Jupiter’s icy moon Europa, scheduled to launch on October 10, 2024. One of the nine instruments on board will be the E-THEMIS (Europa Thermal Emission Imaging System), which will map the moon’s temperatures to detect warmer locations where liquid water is near the surface. Arizona State Regents’ Professor Phil Christensen is the principal investigator of the imager. He also told stories about his mentor, the late Ronald Greeley, a Regents’ Professor of Planetary Geology at the University who was involved in lunar and planetary studies.
