Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders addresses a crowd of progressive allies and supporters on Thursday evening, March 20, 2025, at Mullet Arena on the Tempe campus. This was the second of a five-stop “Fight Oligarchy" campaign with New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to rally against the turmoil in Washington D.C., which they attribute to President Donald Trump’s executive orders and departmental cuts. Sanders highlighted the urgent need to eradicate money's political influence, calling for a united front to ensure a government that serves the people, not corporate interests. “Our fight is to make sure we remain a democracy: one person, one vote. Not billionaires buying elections,” Sanders said, alluding to the $277 million Elon Musk spent to elect Trump and his efforts to cut federal spending and staff within the Department of Government Efficiency. An ASU Fire Department official stated that there were 5,600 people inside the arena and another 5,800 in an overflow area outside, with many individuals being turned away.
