Chris Poulos, executive director of the Center for Justice and Human Dignity, left, moderates a panel with inmate Erik Maloney and ASU Associate Professor Kevin Wright, right, at the launch of their book, “Imprisoned Minds: Lost Boys, Trapped Men and Solutions from Within the Prison,” on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at the medium-security Red Rock Correctional Center in Eloy, Arizona. Wright, who is part of the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice and the director of the Center for Correctional Solutions, co-wrote the book with Maloney, a convicted murderer serving a life sentence. “Imprisoned Minds” features interviews with hardened criminals incarcerated in prison, discussing how their early lives and various influences led them to make the choices they did, resulting in the lives they currently lead. Wright teaches an inside-prison class that includes ASU students and individuals experiencing incarceration, in a program known as Inside-Out. This work aims to shift the prison’s focus from merely reducing recidivism to enhancing inmates’ well-being – improving their quality of life, strengthening relationships with family and friends, and developing skills to thrive both during and after incarceration.
