Former NASA astronaut José Hernández delivers his inspirational life story to 70 high school students whose family members are seasonal migrant workers, at the conclusion of the week-long Migratory Student Summer Academy on Friday, June 7, 2024, in Old Main’s Carson Ballroom on the Tempe campus. The program is funded by the Arizona Department of Education and provides high school kids from migrant families the opportunity to learn STEM at ASU during the week-long camp. Hernandez’s story was recently made into a biopic by Amazon Prime Video. He is the son of migrant farmworkers who dreamed of becoming an astronaut and applied to NASA a dozen times before being accepted into the program. He eventually became the flight engineer on Space Shuttle mission STS-128. Photo by Charlie Leight/ASU News
