Former LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, infrastructure advisor to the State of California, center, talks about work he and current Mayor Karen Bass have accomplished in LA, in a panel with Assefa, director of the California Governor’s Office of Planning and Research, left, and moderator Duke Reiter, founder and executive director of Ten Across, right, in the panel discussion “California and Los Angeles: A coordinated infrastructure agenda for the 21st century,” Thursday, December 7, 2023, at the City Club Los Angeles, as part of the 10 Across Summit. California and Los Angeles loom large in the consciousness of the United States for innumerable reasons. Both are often considered the standard for a proactive approach to environmental, social, and policy issues. But challenges ahead are complicated by an increasingly inequitable economy, climate change, and the unsettled national/international political pictures. The panel explored how the city and state will move forward in tandem. What infrastructural needs will benefit both in the areas of transportation, water, energy and other essential services? How will they be conceptualized, approved, and implemented? What does this mean for land use? And in the process, can California demonstrate its reputation for strong oversight and protection of natural resources that can support a vibrant and inclusive economy?
