ASU Now - Cancer Cactus Garden
DownloadTEMPE - Aug. 29, 2018 - ASU Now - Cancer Cactus Garden - Prickly pair cactus features flamenco skirt-like pads. Psychology Assistant Professor Athena Aktipis along with Biodesign scientific research curator Pamela Winfrey proposed a crested-cactus garden outside of the new Biodesign C building. Aktipis’ husband, ASU Life Sciences Associate Professor Carlo Maley said, “Crested cacti are a beautiful example of how cancer can show up in plants but also be lived with” — in essence, making the cactus a fully embodied argument that “cancer doesn’t have to be a death sentence.” Photo by Charlie Leight/ASU Now
