ASU Gammage's Æolian-Skinner
pipe organ was installed in 1965, about a year after Gammage was completed. The organ has 870 pipes like those often associated with cathedrals and churches. The next year, university organist Charles Brown instituted a series of noontime organ concerts for students. Today the instrument is reserved for special recitals and unique events. The photo was taken on Monday, August 5, 2024. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright — his last public commission — the auditorium will mark its 60th anniversary in September. A center of cultural life in the Valley for half a century, Gammage’s stage has been honored by performers ranging from the inaugural concert by the Philadelphia Orchestra under maestro Eugene Ormandy, Bolshoi Ballet and the New York Philharmonic to Ray Charles, Bruce Springsteen and Johnny Depp. It has hosted a presidential debate and the funeral of Arizona Sen. Barry Goldwater and even served as a movie set for Barbra Streisand’s “A Star Is Born” and Tom Cruise’s “Jerry Maguire.” It has hosted Tony-award-winning plays, including “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Hamilton,” “Lion King” and “Le Misérables.” Photo by Charlie Leight/ASU News
