Philosophy Professor Bertha Manninem talks about events in Selma, AL, at the 32nd annual MLK March on West, Wednesday, January 18, 2023, at the West Campus in Phoenix. A tradition that began in 1991, Around 800 middle school students from around the Valley learned about critical moments in the Civil Rights movement from Montgomery, Selma, Birmingham, Chicago, Phoenix and other communities. Later, they joined members of the ASU community and the public to celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. with a symbolic march to commemorate the 1963 March on Washington. The celebration culminated with an inspirational rendition of the “I Have a Dream” speech by ASU staff members Charles St. Clair and Dontá McGilvery. Photo by Charlie Leight/ASU News
