School of Earth and Space Exploration Director Meenakshi Wadhwa, left, and Mastcam-Z principal investigator, Professor Jim Bell wait for news of a successful stage in preparation for the rover landing, Thursday, February 18, 2021, at ISTB4, during a remote webinar. Bell and members of the ASU team answered questions from nearly 800 viewers prior to Perseverance’s successful landing. The rover Perseverance is the most sophisticated vehicle NASA has ever sent to the red planet. Its goal is to collect carefully selected and documented rock and sediment samples for future return to Earth. It will search for signs of ancient microbial life, characterize the planet’s geology and climate, with the ultimate goal of paving the way for human exploration beyond the moon.
