The image is fully released; the model release is on file in Media Relations & Strategic Communications.
Aerospace engineering graduate student Om Panchal scores a hinge where holes need to go to attach to the enclosure, part of a prototype of an inflatable debris shield landing pad for lunar operations, designed to minimize damage to the structure caused by the kicked-up regolith, fine-grained lunar soil, on Friday, September 13, 2024, in a lab on the Tempe campus. A cadre of ASU students competes with other universities in NASA’s 2024 BIG Idea Challenge, a rigorous challenge that allows students to design, build and test projects related to NASA’s mission needs today while developing relevant hands-on experience that will prepare them for successful aerospace careers. The Challenge asks students and faculty from Space Grant-affiliated colleges and universities to design, develop, and demonstrate critical prototypes supporting the Space Technology Mission Directorate’s work for various NASA missions.
