Charlotte Bowens, with engineering’s Center for Bio-mediated and Bio-inspired Geotechnics (CBBG), created, designed, prototyped and is co-manufacturing VistaPak, a hydration vest for plus-sized people. She was photographed on Friday, December 15, 2023, at Hayden Butte. The vest is selling at the Chandler REI. It came in 7th on the USA Today list of best gifts. Ten years ago, she was in poor health, morbidly obese, and started on a treadmill at the gym and eventually worked her way up to ultramarathons. In 2020, tired of not finding gear to fit her plus-sized body, she created the hydration pack – a combination of a vest and water bladder. Her company is called Conscious Gear and won $17,000 through Venture Devils. She has raised $50k and found a manufacturer for her vest. Photo by Charlie Leight/ASU News
