Sarah Tracy, professor of organizational communication and qualitative methodology, left, talks with Nora McInerny, host of the podcast, “Terrible, Thanks for Asking,” on a webcast about “Toxic Positivity: The Good, Bad and the Made Pretty” on Thursday, March 25, 2021, as part of the 10th anniversary of ASU Project Humanities. McInerny said that Americans feel the need to be stoic in the face of difficulties, and deny their suffering. Instead, she suggests that they be honest and sympathetic during troubling times. Friends should refrain from asking “how are you doing?” and instead ask “what would you like from me at this moment?”
