ASU Astrobiology student Siena Smania created "Metallic Warrior," a metallic fabric dress worthy of the mythical Greek goddess, with gold accents to emulate the metallic surface of the asteroid. Travelers pass by the ‘Psyche: Mission to a Metal World,’ exhibit at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, in Terminal 3, near the TSA Security Checkpoint entrance, Monday, April 3, 2023. Psyche Inspired, an internship program led by ASU, allows undergraduate students from across the country, an opportunity to create art based on the mission. The airport’s exhibition presents a sampling of works by 14 students utilizing paint, fabric, animation, metal and sculpture. The asteroid Psyche is orbiting the sun between Mars and Jupiter and is believed to be the remnant core of a building block of a planet that was forming early in our solar system. It will be the first asteroid visited that is likely mostly metal, as the surface of most asteroids consist of rock or ice. It offers a unique window into planetary formation and the opportunity to learn more about the Earth’s core. Led by a team of investigators from Arizona State University’s School of Earth and Space Exploration, a NASA space mission, also called Psyche, is scheduled to launch in October. The spacecraft will map and study the asteroid’s properties once it reaches its destination in four years. Photo by Charlie Leight/ASU News
