Sun Devil Baseball pitching coach Jeremy Accardo, with Eli Buxton, scrutinizes the arm and hand location of another pitcher after they threw a session in the indoor bullpen filled with high-speed cameras of ASU’s Phoenix Municipal Stadium on Friday, September 20, 2024. One of the Mayo Clinic-ASU Summer Research teams focused on orthopedic surgery and baseball injuries. The research project was based on the need to help find ways to reduce the incidence of shoulder and elbow surgeries in youth baseball pitchers. The Department of Orthopedic Sports Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Arizona has excellent clinical and research faculty that have developed relationships with Sun Devil Athletics as medical providers and created a joint venture baseball biomechanics pitching lab. They worked to increase the research output for the department and to delve deeper into the biomechanics of baseball through the emerging biomechanical models currently being used by Major League teams. ASU Assistant Teaching Professor Charles Leddon combined his extensive MLB and college baseball athletic training experience with Mayo Clinic physicians and a physical therapist.
