ASU Now - Concrete Mobasher
DownloadTEMPE - October 16, 2019 - ASU Now - Concrete Mobasher - This sample of fiber-reinforced Valley Metro light rail test track was tested 2 million times with 0-20,000 pounds of pressure with no support beneath it. This is the equivalent of six double-capacity 3-car trains traveling over it per hour, for 40 years. Professor Barzin Mobasher and his students worked on calculations to determine the amount of fibers to add to concrete to produce a given tensile strength. He is working with Valley Metro to produce a 12-inch concrete foundation to its light rail track embedded with fibers which will be stronger than the 14-inch thick rebar-reinforced concrete it currently uses. The cost savings will be substantial. Mobasher is a professor of civil and environmental engineering faculty in the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment.
