Beaux Jones, acting president and CEO of The Water Institute in New Orleans, right, speaks in the panel discussion, “Water Diplomacy: Can the Colorado and Mississippi rivers be models for decision making,” Wednesday, December 6, 2023, at the City Club Los Angeles, as part of the 10 Across Summit. The two great rivers intersect with the Ten Across region and have made extraordinary cities, agricultural bounty, and industries possible. This was the motivation for the first 10X Summit held in Baton Rouge at the Water Institute in 2018. What was acknowledged then is that these immense rivers cannot be taken for granted or manipulated with dams and levees without eventual consequence. The ongoing megadrought in the West and the overtaxed ecosystems in the Mississippi Delta each demand comprehensive solutions. These require the respective stakeholders to build decision-making processes based on evidence, mutual respect, and well-constructed models. In the process, can these two river systems become models for problem-solving in other arenas? Photo by Charlie Leight/ASU News Photo by Charlie Leight/ASU News
