Professor Manushag “Nush” Powell, who began her term as English department chair on July 1, is an expert on pirate literature. The bookshelf in her Ross Blakley Hall office on ASU’s Tempe campus on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, is filled with hundreds of books on a vast array of topics.. She recently published an article about pirates and disability and where our ideas about hooks and peg legs come from. Her academic focus is on English and comparative literature, specializing in 18th-century British literature and culture, which extends to historical publishing, women’s periodicals and narratives of piracy.
