Army veteran and ASU alum Vance Leland creates a soft-clay olive branch design on a 5-1/2-inch square board on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at the School of Art’s warehouse. The clay projects reflect resiliency, strength or empowerment to the artists. Leland has a two-year-old daughter named Olive. Half a dozen veterans affiliated with the Uniiversity, are working on the sculptures that will be cast in resin-coated sand and then have molten iron poured into the form. The final stage will be adding a colored patina to the sculptures. The program is run by Bruce Ward, a veteran and ASU BFA alumnus working with the Pat Tillman Veterans Center and assisted by ASU art faculty. Photo by Charlie Leight/ASU News
