Stephen Bokenkamp
DownloadStephen Bokenkamp, Professor in the School of International Languages and Cultures at Arizona State University, is teaching a course on "Daode Jing": The Chinese Bible. At 5,000 words, the Daode Jing (Tao-te ching) is one of the shortest religiousbooks in the world and after the Christian Bible, the the most widely translated. This course introduces the students to the wisdom of its mysterious author the "Old Boy," Laozi, himself and some of the startlingly wide variety of ways his short, gnomic utterances have been interpreted from the earliest Chinese commentary of the third century BCE to modern American writers like Ursula LeGuin, Timothy Leary, and the self-help Guru Wayne Dyer.
