Former legislator and community activist Alfredo Gutierrez, 78, will receive his bachelor’s degree in philosophy this semester. He is photographed on the Tempe campus on Friday, April 26, 2024. Gutierrez started at ASU on the GI Bill in 1967 after returning from Vietnam. While here, he became involved in a community campaign to secure better working conditions for the laundry workers at ASU, which drew public attention. The Board of Regents wanted to expel him, but the 1950s-era code of conduct did not include activism, so they changed the code of conduct. Then, he participated in an anti-war protest on campus and was asked to leave. He left and joined RFK's campaign and then went into Arizona politics. He didn’t think about returning for his degree until a few years ago when he spoke to high schoolers about the importance of a bachelor’s degree. So, he returned last year. To his dismay, he found out that his Vietnam-era GI Bill benefits had expired, so he had to pay for the classes. He’s now trying to get those benefits reinstated for other Vietnam veterans.
