For the second attempt, electrical engineering graduate student Sarwan Shah tries to push and twist the auger as deep as he can into a test bed of sand before testing how much vertical pressure the anchor will hold before pulling out of the sand for the axial vertical pull test in a former shower room in Sun Devil Hall on Wednesday, September 4, 2024. A cadre of ASU students are competing with other universities in NASA’s 2024 BIG Idea Challenge on inflatable systems for lunar operations. The ASU team is testing its anchoring system for deployable debris shields. The BIG (Breakthrough, Innovative and Game-changing) challenge provides students with up to $150,000 to design, develop and demonstrate creative solutions for issues facing manned lunar operations.
