Around 2700 theater patrons attend ASU Gammage for the 2024-25 season opening night with “Girl from the North Country,” Tuesday, August 20, 2024. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright — his last public commission — the auditorium will mark its 60th anniversary in September. A center of cultural life in the Valley for half a century, Gammage’s stage has been honored by performers ranging from the inaugural concert by the Philadelphia Orchestra under maestro Eugene Ormandy, Bolshoi Ballet and the New York Philharmonic to Ray Charles, Bruce Springsteen and Johnny Depp. It has hosted a presidential debate and the funeral of Arizona Sen. Barry Goldwater and even served as a movie set for Barbra Streisand’s “A Star Is Born” and Tom Cruise’s “Jerry Maguire.” It has hosted Tony-award-winning plays, including “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Hamilton,” “Lion King” and “Le Misérables.” Photo by Charlie Leight/ASU News
