20220505 - E-THEMIS Camera - Tempe
Image fully released. Model release on file in Media Relations & Strategic Communications.
Some of the transportation cases for the E-THEMIS imager are padded hard plastic boxes, others are pressurized with floating interiors, and are stored, Thursday, May 5, 2022, in a clean room in ISTB4, on the Tempe campus. The imager will aid in conducting a detailed study of Jupiter’s moon Europa and assist investigators in determining whether the moon could harbor conditions suitable for life in the global ocean that underlies the icy shell at the surface. The $55 million instrument has been tested in a vacuum chamber and is now having its imaging system finely calibrated within a $1 million high-tech environment. The lens has a field of view of five degrees, or the equivalent of a 500 mm lens on a typical full-frame camera. The imager is expected to go to Pasadena to JPL later this month for preparation for a mid-year 2023 launch. Photo by Charlie Leight/ASU News
