Melissa Wilson, Banner Gateway's director of nursing, right, and Kelley Kieffer, the chief nursing officer, talk about the facility to the new cohort of 10 nursing students, as around 144 T5, or fifth-semester, students from the Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovations meet with representatives of hospitals where they’ll be doing their clinical rotations for the next four semesters, at the Health Futures Center, Wednesday, August 18, 2021. Edson is experimenting with how it guides the nursing clinical rotations. It will pioneer what’s called a “team model” approach. Instead of students rotating through different specialties and facilities, they are matched by a survey of interests to a practice where they will do most of their clinical training. The premise is that students can become embedded in the culture of the practice and gain the confidence and skills to think like a nurse no matter the setting they ultimately end up in post-graduation. The students will concentrate on medical-surgical care, overnight care, emergency departments, ambulatory care, neurological and physical rehabilitation, pediatric care, healthy aging, critical care, and perioperative care.
