Kadence Sayles, Miss Native Mesa Community College, left, and Kaitlyn Yazzie, the first attendant, greet the audience in their tribal languages, then in English, to begin the Mesa Community College graduation on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at Desert Financial Arena. First Lady and Professor Jill Biden delivered the keynote address to more than 700 graduates. She congratulated the accomplishments many of the students overcame – being told they shouldn’t go to college, working at one or more jobs, taking care of children and other family members – to earn their certificates or associate’s degrees. Biden admitted it took her 15 years to complete her collegiate education which included a bachelor’s degree, two master’s and a Doctor of Education, while raising three children and going to school at night and working full time. She continues teaching writing and English at Northern Virginia Community College. Photo by Charlie Leight/ASU News
