1975 The first Thunderbird Balloon Classic was held on the grounds of the Thunderbird Campus on November 8 & 9, 1975 as a fundraiser by the school's auxiliary, Friends of Thunderbird. Seventeen hot air balloons participated in the event, which eventually grew to more than 150 balloons. Doris Paine, first president of Friends of Thunderbird , was the wife of Jordan Paine, a member of the school's first graduating class. She was the primary figure in starting the Balloon event. Mavis Voris, wife of President William Voris, was also instrumental in developing the Balloon Race and ensuring its continuation throughout the Voris years.
