20240916 NASA Big Idea Challenge

Download

20240916 - NASA Big Idea Challenge - Tempe

The image is fully released; the model release is on file in Media Relations & Strategic Communications.

Third-year mechanical engineering student Grant Lesley checks the attached scale and tension strap to the anchor, testing how much horizontal pressure the anchor will hold before pulling out of the sand in a former shower room in Sun Devil Hall on Monday, September 16, 2024. The aluminum cage with the 45 pound weight are designed to prevent the anchor from twisting to the side. A group of ASU students competes with other universities in NASA’s 2024 BIG Idea Challenge, a rigorous challenge for students to design, build and test prototypes related to NASA’s current mission needs. The program challenges students and faculty from Space Grant-affiliated colleges and universities to address critical issues in the Space Technology Mission Directorate’s work for various NASA missions. The ASU team will present the findings of its AEGIS - Inflatable Lunar Landing Pad System, along with five other colleges and universities in November. Photo by Charlie Leight/ASU News
