Dried sediment or sludge, after it has been removed in the cleaning of SRP water for the City's residents, is normally packed and sent to landfills from the South Tempe Water Treatment Plant. As part of the ASU Project Cities program in collaboration with the City of Tempe, chemical engineering students will work on capstone projects focusing on developing innovative strategies to divert water treatment solids — both inert and organic waste — from landfills to assist Tempe in achieving its sustainability goals.
