Jeffrey Cohen is the dean of humanities in The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University. He previously served as a professor and chair of the Department of English at The George Washington University and founded the GW Medieval and Early Modern Studies Institute. At ASU, Cohen is laying the groundwork for projects that intensify the university’s strengths in the environmental humanities, increase opportunities for the work of humanities scholars to reach the wider public and ensure the next generation of scholars, teachers, and researchers (especially in traditional fields) is the most diverse to date. Despite a decade of widespread decline in humanities majors and enrollments at higher education institutions nationwide, the humanities division at Arizona State University has increased enrollment numbers in recent years, added new programs and recruited renowned scholars to its faculty.
