Dontá McGilvery, the Graduate College's coordinator of the graduate student experience, recites Martin Luther King, Jr.'s famous speech with Professor of Practice Charles St. Clair at the annual ASU commemoration celebration of the 1963 March on Washington and its highlight of Martin Luther King, Jr., during the MLK March on West, Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at the West Valley campus in Phoenix. The tribute began in 1991, with this year featuring more than 1200 middle-school students from around the Valley. They learned about critical moments in the Civil Rights movement from Montgomery, Selma, Birmingham, Detroit, Phoenix and other communities. Later, they joined members of the ASU community and the public to celebrate the legacy of King with an inspirational rendition of the “I Have a Dream” speech by ASU staff members Charles St. Clair and Dontá McGilvery, and moving singing of the Star Spangled Banner and the Black National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” by local performer James Smith.
