The third set of historic stairs winds up to the fourth and fifth floors. The handrail on that staircase was damaged during one of the many incidents during the Los Angeles Newspaper Guild’s strike against the Herald Examiner, which began in 1967. The strike lasted 10 years and is cited as leading to the demise of the newspaper due to lowered circulation and revenue. During one incident, strikers beat the banister of these stairs with baseball bats as they made their way to the fifth-floor office of George R. Hearst Jr., grandson of William Randolph Hearst and publisher at the time. The dents from the baseball bats are still visible today. The building is a Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument designed in the Mission Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival styles by Julia Morgan and constructed in 1914 for publishing mogul William Randolph Hearst.
