The completed 40-foot tall structure will house a prototype of a passive carbon-capture system, based on the research of Klaus Lackner, an engineering professor and director of the ASU Center for Negative Carbon Emissions, and marketed by Carbon Collect Inc., based in Dublin. Lackner developed the proprietary technology for the mechanical tree to remove carbon dioxide from passing air to combat global warming at scale. It acts like a tree that is thousands of times more efficient at removing CO2. The 30-foot tall “mechanical trees,” with 150 disks instead of leaves, allow the captured gas to be sequestered or sold for reuse in various applications, such as synthetic fuels, enhanced oil recovery, food, beverage and agriculture industries.
