Prof. Tom Sugar and his team conceived, designed and produced the APEX robotic exoskeleton to address the high injury rate of aerial porters – airmen who lift content and push pallets of military and humanitarian supplies for transport worldwide. A DARPA Rapid Innovation Fund grant funded the project. The ASU team, with Martin onsite to support the test, completed an 8-week test period with the aerial porters of the 60th Aerial Port Squadron, which resulted in no injuries. The 8-lb devices disengaged when walking, running, sitting or crawling to allow free movements to not be in the way. When activated, they assisted with pushing and lifting to about 22-foot pounds of pressure per leg. It also stabilized the hips to prevent lower-back injuries.
